Medea

2021 | Radioptical Opera | 65'
for narrator, 4 voices, chamber ensemble and electronics

A radioptical opera that exploits the separation of visual and sonic channels in remote performance. The screen opens into Medea's interior world while sound mediates her exchanges with other characters, creating an operatic form specific to distributed viewing rather than adapted from live performance. Musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists across America, Canada, Germany, and Greece performed simultaneously through the aejaa platform. Stage direction by Chrysanthi Goula. Live Visuals and screen direction by Christos Atzinas.

premiere

Online via aejaa platform, 2021. Featured performers across Athens, London, Berlin, and New York.

Thalassa Quarry

2022 | Opera / Contemporary Musical Theater | 75'
for female polyphonic ensemble, wind ensemble and percussion

A site-specific music theatre work where Koumela's Quarry in Tinos serves as both stage and score. The spatial proportions and topography of the quarry become the compositional material—distances, angles, and layered surfaces translate directly into musical structure. The piece explores marble's metamorphic nature and function as memory-matter, using the stone itself as percussion instrument while performers move through its architecture. Directed by Marilena Katranidou. Text by Dimitra Kandia.

premiere

Tinos, Koumela Quarries, 2022 and online via aejaa platform.

If Not This

2025 | Piano and Electronics | 50'

A study in change and absence—what happens when we alter or lose. Four through-composed movements generate four transformations: a similar to the changed, the exploration of the space of the change, absence as metamorphosis and finally the prototype itself—the first piano and synth I had recorded in my home town. Piano and modular synthesizers exist as mutual transformations in this precursor to the inthi compositional system.

Dot's Walk

2013 | Voice, Piano and Electronics | 45'

A work for piano, narrator, and electronics exploring the nature of a unit placed in space and time. The piece presents text and music not as compositional choice but as compositional outcome, alternating between narrated silences and instrumental sections across a thirteen-movement form derived from the ratio 4/3. Nick Saltrese's narrative follows Dot—a being discovering dimension, distance, and reflection—while the electronics create an abstract harmonic environment for the piano's familiar gestures, enacting the dualism between known and unknown.

premiere

Roy O. Disney Hall at CalArts, Los Angeles CA, 2013

Eight Queens

2012 | Chamber Ensemble | 7'

The piece is based on the eight queens puzzle—the problem of placing eight chess queens on an 8x8 chessboard such that none of them are able to capture any other using the standard chess queens' moves. Each game round produces a different formation on the board. Several constructed formations along with the twelve unique fundamental solutions of the problem were mapped into a predefined 8x8 pan-magic square. The resulting number sequences were used as the core material of the piece either in the harmonic structure or in the rhythmic domain.

premiere

Pitman Hall Oklahoma, OK, 2012

Leake Street Canons

2018 | Installation/Performance | 300'

A five-hour electroacoustic installation and performance created for Art Night London at the Leake Street Tunnel in Lambeth, London. Developed in collaboration with Nikolas Ventourakis and funded by the British Arts Council, the work transformed the tunnel space with spatially distributed sound and intermittent live performance interventions.

premiere
